Courier Mail story on Kim

Posted on Wednesday, October 18th, 2017

Here is an article from the Courier Mail, a short biography of Kim and the influences on her as an artist.

It covers a little bit of the background to her new book, Coral Sea Dreaming.

I love the ocean. Its force and beauty inspires me, calms me and fascinates me. Through my books and silk art I want to capture its beauty and help educate our next generation about the importance of its preservation.

Coral Sea Dreaming is my 11th book and is a product of my lifelong love of the ocean, my fascination with the incredible beauty and diversity of coral reefs and my admiration of David Hannan’s stunning underwater cinematography.

Future of coral reefs in focus

Posted on Monday, July 17th, 2017

(From the Ballina Advocate – Wednesday, July 12, 2017 – ballinaadvocate.com.au)

BALLINA artist and author Kim Michelle Toft has partnered with an underwater cinematographer to produce a book aimed at saving coral reefs.

Ms Toft first met David Hannan when she bought his video, Coral Sea Dreaming.

David’s works have been featured on the BBC, National Geographic and the Discovery Channel.

Shortly after their first meeting, David started collecting Kim’s silk illustrations featured in her award-winning children’s books.

Twenty years later and they have produced the book Coral Sea Dreaming: The Picture Book.

David and Kim share the belief that education is the key to the future of oceans and longevity of coral reefs around the world.

“The reef at night is teaming with energy and wildlife, all working together to create an amazing underwater masterpiece,” Kim said.

“However, coral reefs around the world are critically endangered.”

The book is aimed at pre-school to primary-age children. This is Kim’s 11th book, and is the product of her “life-long love of the ocean, my fascination with the incredible beauty and diversity of coral reefs and my admiration of David Hannan’s stunning underwater cinematography”.

All the illustrations in the book are hand-painted onto silk.

David has produced a series of two-minute videos of all the creatures in the book, which is available online at Ocean Channel.

The book will be launched at 2pm on July 22 in the Fenwick Room in the Ramada Hotel and Suites, Martin St, Ballina.
